What is school for?

Seth Godin asks:
What is school for? To teach the children to be respectful and obedient? Have you learned to hold a little back, instead of going all out? To comply? To fit in? To be an interchangeable part? To become a consumer?

Maybe we should encourage kids to go build something interesting. Maybe we should encourage them to connect dots, instead of collect dots. Maybe we should encourage passion and insight. Persistence in the face of a skeptical authority figure is priceless. Do you care enough about your work to be willing to be criticized for it?
